You are debt free!

Oh, I know. You probably have debt.

I do too. My name is currently on a mortgage. At different times in my life, I have had car loans, parent plus loans, and credit card debt as well.

I have a heart for so many of our society’s young adults who are straddled with college loans. Watching them face that long road ahead – every month for years – makes me sad. I wish I could knock on each of their doors and deliver the good news that I paid their debt in full. I wish someone would knock on your door and tell you that all of your debt — no matter the type — is paid in full.

All debt, gone.

Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding out all of your financial debt is gone, for real. ALL. OF. IT. I assume you would be filled with joy. You might even dance. You would most certainly tip your head back and laugh.

You would also feel so much lighter! You always knew you were carrying the weight of debt every minute of every day, but now — feeling the difference between before and after — you would know exactly how heavy that weight has been. You would feel as light as a feather even if the bathroom scale reported the same body weight as yesterday.

Ah, I wish this could happen for you. Financial debt is no laughing matter. But you are debt free in another way.

You are debt free!

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:13-14)

So here’s the question.

Why don’t we wake up every day rejoicing that all of our spiritual debt is gone, just as we would wake up rejoicing if all of our financial debt was gone? Folks, all of our sin debt is gone. ALL. OF. IT. FORGIVEN. Why aren’t we filled with joy for that reason alone? Why aren’t we dancing and laughing? Why don’t we feel light as a feather no matter what the bathroom scale registers?

God is at your front door.

Just like I wish I could show up at front doors to tell people I paid off their loans, God is knocking on each of our doors so we will answer and He can remind us that Jesus paid all of our debt.

ALL. OF. IT.

For some readers, this is brand-new news. For others, your spiritual debt has been paid but you have  forgotten the miracle of the cross. I get it. The challenges of day-to-day life tends to squeeze out our spiritual realities. I challenge all of us — me included — to wake up tomorrow morning experiencing the full effects of being spiritually debt free!

Financial debt is temporary.

I know. I want my financial debt gone too. Financial debt is a burden that can last a lifetime, but our spiritual debt lasts forever. Our financial debt hinders our life, yes, but spiritual debt ruins our eternity.

Funny thing, though.

Unlike financial debt that usually requires a long-term payment plan, our spiritual debt can be paid for in minutes at the foot of the cross. Just tell Jesus you want to accept His gift of forgiveness. Let Him pay your debt. Stop trying to pay it yourself with good behavior or anything else, and let the cross pay. If you already have let Him pay your sin debt, then live like it’s true.

Let’s spend the day dancing about being debt free.

  1. Hi, Friend. Thank you for the encouragement to dance and rejoice and be thankful. As Jason Crabb sings so powerfully, “I’m free at last. All my pain is in the past. I’m free at last.” YES, Lord! Thank you for paying my debt. I am free!

Planting and Watering

I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes growth.

1 Corinthians 3:6
