Summer Snippet 7: Are we sitting around fat and happy?

I have always wondered if farmers have a more tactile understanding of faith than those that don’t. They plant seeds in the ground and expect a harvest needed to support their families.

Faith.

This week I listened to a podcast by Beth Moore about sowing and reaping. She told a story about going to Angola where people are literally starving to death. Some organizations provide seed so people can grow their own food. Unfortunately, instead of sowing the seeds into the ground, starvation drives people to eat the seeds instead. Doing so fills their bellies for a day, but no harvest is ever reaped.

Does the church do the same?

Do we Christians go to church, fill up on God’s word and then leave with our bellies full, so to speak? Do we then keep the seeds ourselves and forget to sow it?

Unless something is sowed, nothing can be reaped.

I get tired of sowing, don’t you? I am wondering if this blog is worth my weekly time, or if I have it in me to speak again at our church in September when my job keeps me so busy.

Yes, it’s hard, but sow we must!

Using parenting as an example, we are capable of wasting days with our kids by not sowing. Sure, we feed and clothe our kids, but it takes additional intention and grit to have devotions, pray well, answer their questions thoroughly and help them view their experiences through the lens of God’s Word.

Exhausting; but the more we sow now, the more God will reap later.

In the same way, we can’t sit around fat and happy on God’s Word and expect to reap. We need to teach God’s word. We need to write and speak, attend Bible studies and lead Bible studies. We need to sow His seeds of truth everywhere we go. Certainly God can cause a rock to share seeds of truth to a passerby if He wishes, but His common calling is to use us to fulfill His mission to take the gospel to the world and advance His Kingdom.

Do we walk around the earth like Paul?

Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?” Paul replied, “Short time or long–I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am…[a Christian]. Acts 26:28-29

Let’s get sowing!

Picture Explanation: Father and son headed south on a trip while I headed north. Trips like this without schedules that require hours in the car together can be concentrated times of sowing. Someday, my husband will see what eternal things were wrought in the life our son from this trip. Sound crazy? Not to me! Everything we sow in faith will be reaped in heaven.

Planting and Watering

I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes growth.
