There was a storm in the middle of the night this past Saturday. A deafening sound of wind woke me up and I stayed awake for a while as thunder and lightning yelled from the sky and wind and rain pummeled our property.
Then yesterday, I noticed this fallen tree in our neighbor’s yard.
Without forethought, as swift as lightning — and with FORCE — this prayer went right through my mind. I kid you not.
Lord, don’t let me ever look like that tree.
Up until this week the tree stood tall and looked strong. Then when just the right angle of wind pushed against it at just the right speed, the tree fell flat on its face.
Look how shallow the roots are.
Summer brings with it lax schedules and a break in normal routine. Let’s decide NOW that we will remain firmly rooted so when even just the right difficulty hits us at our most vulnerable angle this summer, we will not fall.
Our family is in the middle of a move. This morning workers arrived to pack my house up. I rolled out of bed and hit the ground running. It wasn’t until an hour later that I realized…
No devotions with my son. No prayer. No Bible.
I was so sad. God holds the universe together and when my routine changed I didn’t purposefully surrender the day into His hands and invite Him to show up as His good, perfect, magnificent Self before I dared to get going.
Sure, it’s just one morning.
But we all know such mornings can turn into a summer.
Let’s not let that happen. Let’s never look like this tree.
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. (Colossians 2:6-7)

Picture Explanation: Ten years ago I thought I ushered my last child into teenager-hood. God, however, knew another child was going to follow ten years later. That little one became a teen this week. I am assuming he is the last of our children to become a teen, but I don’t pretend to know what the future holds any longer. Also, my mom came to pack up the house with me. Could not have done it without her.
